Switch vendors identify supported transceivers through EEPROM fields such as vendor name, part number and capability codes. A physically compatible module may still trigger an unsupported-transceiver warning if those values do not match the platform policy.
Start with the switch and software release
Record the exact switch model, line card, operating system and port speed. Some ports support several speeds but require explicit configuration. Verify fiber type, wavelength, reach and connector before choosing the module.
Use correctly coded modules
A qualified third-party supplier programs the module for the intended OEM platform and tests it in representative hardware. Ask for DDM support, serial traceability and a clear replacement policy. For mixed estates, label spare modules by compatibility profile.
Commissioning checks
- Inspect and clean fiber connectors.
- Confirm the switch recognizes vendor, wavelength and serial data.
- Review DDM transmit and receive power against warning thresholds.
- Test error counters and link stability under traffic.
