Media converters extend Ethernet over fiber without replacing existing copper equipment. The correct model depends on environment, link speed, fiber interface and power requirements.
Commercial models
Desktop and rack-mount commercial converters are suitable for offices, data rooms and controlled cabinets. They typically operate from 0°C to 50°C and prioritize compact size and cost efficiency.
Industrial models
Industrial converters use DIN-rail mounting, redundant DC power inputs and wider operating temperature ranges, commonly -40°C to 75°C. Select them for roadside cabinets, factories, substations and unconditioned enclosures.
PoE and management
PoE models power cameras, access points or phones at the remote copper port. Verify the IEEE 802.3af/at/bt class and total power budget. Managed models add VLAN, link monitoring and remote diagnostics; unmanaged models are appropriate for straightforward point-to-point extension.
Selection checklist
- Match Ethernet speed and duplex behavior.
- Choose fixed optics or an SFP slot.
- Calculate fiber reach and loss budget.
- Confirm power input, mounting and surge requirements.
